A record 6.77 crore income tax returns for the Assessment Year 2023–24 were submitted up to July 31 of this year, according to the income tax department, including 53.67 lakh by first-time filers. It said that July had 16.1% higher income tax returns than the assessment year 2022–23.
The income tax department stated, “The total number of ITRs for AY 2023-24 submitted till July 31, 2023 are more than 6.77 crore, which is 16.1% greater than the total ITRs for AY 2022-23 (5.83 crore) filed until July 31, 2022.”
On July 31, 2023, the most ITRs had ever been filed—over 64.33 lakh—had been submitted in a one day. Up till July 31, 2023, the department received 53.67 lakh ITRs from first-time filers, which is a good indication of the expansion of the tax base, it said.
The income Tax department expressed its gratitude to taxpayers and tax professionals for helping it reach this milestone. The department also urged all those who had not filed their ITR for AY 2023-24 to file their ITR.
The last day to file ITR was July 31. Salaried taxpayers and those who did not need their accounts checked for 2022–2023 income had until July 31 to file income tax filings.
