The Ministry of Home Affairs has introduced two new visa categories, the “e-student visa” and the “e-student-x visa,” in a significant effort to increase India’s appeal as a destination for foreign study. These visas are intended to simplify the application procedure for international students and their accompanying dependents seeking higher education in India. The initiative complements the Government of India’s efforts to promote the Study in India (SII) program.
Visa categories: Students enrolled in authorized undergraduate, graduate, doctoral, or certificate programs in India can apply for the e-student visa, which is now open to international students who have registered on the SII portal. Additionally, families of e-student visa holders accompanying these students on their trip are eligible for the e-student-x visa. Both visa types permit admission through any permitted immigration checkpoint and have a maximum validity period of five years, with the possibility of an extension within India.
Streamlining admission using the SII portal: The Study in India (SII) portal would be a one-stop shop for overseas students looking to simplify their admission procedure. Admission to a partner university requires students to register on the SII portal first. They can then proceed with applying for the new e-visas. A distinct SII ID will be created during portal registration, which will be a crucial identification number for visa applications. After receiving an admission offer, students can apply on the official Indian visa website (indianvisaonline.gov.in).
Educational opportunities: The SII program, which the Ministry of Education oversees, collaborates with more than 600 Indian universities and provides over 8,000 courses in various areas. They include the arts, sciences, engineering, administration, and specialized fields like Buddhist studies and yoga. Students can choose from multiple undergraduate, graduate, doctoral, and certification programs to meet their academic objectives.
SII Portal: The SII Portal streamlines the application procedure. Students can register by entering their name, country, birthdate, email address, and mobile number. Following registration, individuals can complete the online application form by logging in using their SII ID or email address. The website ensures a smooth and seamless experience by connecting students with prestigious Indian colleges through its user-friendly interface.
Driving international academic exchange: India is well-positioned to improve its standing as a global educational destination by implementing these e-visa categories and using the SII program. The program makes India a global leader in higher education, improves India’s cultural and economic environment, and promotes intellectual exchange with other countries.
