In India, 2,083 cases of COVID-19 sub-variant JN.1, and its lineages have been reported. WHO says JN.1 is a “variant of interest.”
On Monday, the INSACOG reported 2,083 COVID-19 sub-variant JN.1 and its lineages cases in the country. The Indian SARS-CoV-2 Genomics Consortium found 814 JN.1 sequences in 18 states and UTs and 943 JN.1.1 sequences.
JN.1.11 was found in 244 cases and its sub-lineages in the rest.
The Centre asked states and Union Territories to stay vigilant last month after discovering new varieties.
JN.1 is a “variant of interest” for the WHO due to its rapid dissemination, yet it poses a “low” worldwide public health concern.
The international body said the JN.1 coronavirus sub-variant was previously designated as a variation of interest (VOI) as part of the BA.2.86 sub-lineages, the parent lineage.
Conclusion
INSATOG has found 2,083 cases of COVID-19 sub-variant JN.1 and related lineages in India. Due to its rapid dissemination, the WHO classified JN.1 as a “variant of interest” with a “low” worldwide public health risk. States and Union Territories must be vigilant, says the Centre.
