India had a 774 increase in COVID cases in a single day on Saturday, with 4,187 current cases, according to the Union Health Ministry. According to statistics updated by the government at 8 a.m., up to two deaths were recorded in 24 hours, one from Gujarat and one from Tamil Nadu. Over 92% of the 4,187 current patients are being treated at home as they recuperate.

Up until December 5, there were double digits of cases every day. However, with the arrival of a new COVID-19 variety, JN.1, and the cold weather, the number of cases started to grow once more. In response to an increase in COVID cases and the discovery of the JN.1 sub-variant in the nation, the Center has already requested that states and Union territories keep a continuous watch.

Following December 5, December 31, 2023, saw the largest single-day increase of 841 instances, or 0.2% of the peak cases recorded in May 2021, according to PTI. According to an official, the JN.1 variation is not causing an exponential increase in the number of new cases or a spike in hospital admissions or fatality rates in the nation.

Concurrently, the government of Karnataka mandated that those suffering from influenza illness (ILI) or severe acute respiratory illness (SARI) undergo the COVID test. Dinesh Gundu Rao, the minister of health for Karnataka, stated that the COVID-19 positivity rate is 3.82% and that over 7,000 tests are performed daily. The state’s optimism rate hasn’t decreased yet.

“Those who exhibit symptoms are being tested and observed.” People who are isolated at home have been instructed to use additional caution. It is anticipated that Karnataka may see a decline in COVID cases as early as next week,” he continued. Three waves of COVID-19 have hit India in the past; the Delta wave, which is expected to last from April to June 2021, is the one with the highest daily case and fatality rate. On May 7, 2021, 4,14,188 instances and 3,915 fatalities were recorded, marking the peak.

Over 4.5 crore people have been afflicted, and over 5.3 lakh have perished nationwide since the outbreak started in early 2020. According to the ministry’s website, nearly 4.4 crore individuals have recovered from the illness, meaning that the country’s recovery rate is 98.8%. The website states that the nation has already received 220.67 crore doses of the COVID-19 vaccination.
