Rohit Sharma etched his name in the annals of cricket history on Tuesday, March 4, by becoming the first captain to lead a team to the final of all four ICC events. Under his leadership, India reached the World Test Championship final in June 2023, the ODI World Cup final in November 2023, the T20 World Cup final in June 2024, and now the Champions Trophy final in March 2025.

While MS Dhoni led India to the T20 World Cup finals in 2007 and 2014, the ODI World Cup final in 2011, and the Champions Trophy final in 2013, he never had the opportunity to captain India in a World Test Championship final. Similarly, New Zealand’s Kane Williamson took his team to the ODI World Cup final in 2019, the World Test Championship final in 2021, and the T20 World Cup final in 2021, but the Kiwis failed to secure a place in the Champions Trophy final during his tenure.

Having already secured his place among India’s most successful captains, Rohit joined the elite company of Kapil Dev and MS Dhoni by winning an ICC trophy in June 2024. As he gears up for the Champions Trophy final on Sunday, March 9, his sights are set on securing a second ICC title. India will face the winner of the second semifinal clash between New Zealand and South Africa.

Since taking over as India’s full-time white-ball captain in November 2021, Rohit has led the team to an impressive unbeaten run in the 2025 Champions Trophy. India began their campaign with a commanding six-wicket victory over Bangladesh in Dubai on February 20. Their winning momentum continued with another six-wicket triumph over Pakistan in the second Group A encounter.

In the last group-stage match against New Zealand on March 2, India secured a 44-run win, further solidifying their dominance in the tournament. The semifinal against Australia on March 4 saw India successfully chase down a 265-run target, with Virat Kohli leading the charge with a stellar 84-run innings off 98 balls. India reached the target in 48.1 overs, sealing the victory with six wickets in hand.

With the final now in sight, Rohit Sharma has the chance to add another illustrious chapter to his already remarkable captaincy record.
