Indian spinner Yuzvendra Chahal, who was overlooked for the Duleep Trophy 2024, made headlines by picking up a five-wicket haul for Northamptonshire in the ongoing County Championship Division Two match against Derbyshire on Tuesday, September 10. Playing at County Ground in Northampton, the 34-year-old spinner delivered a match-winning performance, finishing with figures of 5 for 45 in 16.3 overs. His impressive bowling effort helped dismiss Derbyshire for 165 runs in their first innings, giving Northamptonshire a 54-run lead.
Chahal’s contribution is particularly noteworthy as he continues to make a mark in red-ball cricket, despite never having played a Test match for India. While he was part of the Indian squad that won the T20 World Cup in 2024, Chahal has mostly been known for his prowess in white-ball cricket. His last appearance for the Indian team was in a T20I against the West Indies on August 13, 2023, at Central Broward Regional Park Stadium Turf Ground.
As India’s all-time leading wicket-taker in T20Is, Chahal has an impressive track record in the shortest format of the game. However, despite being included in the squads for both the 2022 and 2024 T20 World Cups, he did not feature in the playing XI in either tournament.
Will Chahal get a chance to play in red ball cricket for the country? What do you think?
