The ongoing conflict between Google and Indian startups over the tech giant’s new Play Store policies has seen a recent development. As of March 4, 2024, eight out of ten prominent Indian companies, whose apps were initially delisted, have managed to regain their presence on the Play Store by complying with the revised guidelines. However, several apps remain removed, and broader concerns about the policies persist.
Compliance Leads to Relisting:
Sources have revealed that many of the relisted apps opted for the “consumption-only” model, which allows users to access existing content within the app but restricts in-app purchases and subscriptions. This approach appears to be the temporary solution for some companies seeking immediate reinstatement.
Previous Delisting and Reinstatement:
Earlier, Google had delisted over a dozen apps belonging to major Indian companies like Shaadi.com, Matrimony, Alt platforms like Stage and Aha, dating apps like Truly Madly and Quack Quack, audio platform Kuku FM, and social networking app FRND. Following criticism and discussions, Google reinstated some apps, including Shaadi.com, Info Edge’s Naukri, 99acres, and NaukriGulf. However, a significant number remain delisted, creating ongoing uncertainty for affected companies and their users.
IAMAI’s Stance:
The Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI) emphasized on Sunday, March 3, 2024, that a majority of the initially delisted apps are yet to be relisted on the Play Store. This statement highlights the ongoing nature of the conflict and the potential impact on numerous apps and their user base.
Larger Conflict and Government Intervention:
The current scenario extends beyond mere app delistings. It reflects a broader clash between Google’s revised Play Store policies and the concerns of Indian startups regarding potential anti-competitive practices and limitations on their business models. The Indian government has also taken an interest in the matter, seeking to mediate and ensure a balanced outcome that fosters a healthy digital ecosystem.
