The Indian cricket team is certainly one of the best teams of the cricket world and it has been performing pretty well under Rohit Sharma’s captaincy currently. While India has won bilateral series and some tournaments, it has failed in winning an ICC trophy in the last 10 years despite coming quite close few times.
Recently, the Indian team remained unbeatable till the finals of the 2023 ODI WC but it lost the finals to Australia. Many felt that it was the last chance for Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli to win an ICC trophy but their comeback in the T20 squad has confirmed that the BCCI wants to give them one more chance as the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 is going to take place in June.
Recently, the former England cricketer Monty Panesar shed his opinion in regard to Rohit and Virat’s comeback in T20 squad and India’s 10 year drought of ICC trophy. He said, “They have to give them (Kohli and Rohit) another World Cup. Look he (Rohit Sharma) is playing well. India always play well in these kinds of bilateral series (Ind vs Eng test series) where the pressure isn’t on.”
He further said, “In these kinds of games (bilateral series) they play their best cricket but when it comes to an ICC semifinals or final they just fail to handle it. I don’t know why, when I watched the World Cup, they played the best cricket – the seamers and everything but it’s just one game. I think it’s just the pressure of playing in the finals. I don’t think this current team knows how to win a final but it knows how to get to the final. They play their best cricket going to the final and everybody thinks they are going to win the tournament but then it’s that one game.”
Do you agree with Monty Panesar?
