Indian telcos want Government to shut down 2G and 3G services

Reliance Jio and Vodafone Idea have urged the Indian government to shut down 2G and 3G networks to improve the 5G ecosystem by shifting consumers to 4G and 5G networks. They also noted the difficulties of upgrading subscribers’ bandwidths.

Reliance Jio and Vodafone Idea want TRAI to shut down 2G and 3G networks. Both telecom carriers claimed switching consumers to 4G and 5G would improve the 5G ecosystem. In response to TRAI’s consultation paper on 5G ecosystem growth barriers, the recommendation was made.

Jio said, “The Government should develop a policy and glide path for closing down the 2G and 3G networks completely so that unnecessary network costs should be avoided, and all customers can be migrated to 4G and 5G services.” Vodafone Idea agreed, arguing that outdated networks worsen the digital divide and hinder 5G application growth.

The extensive use of 2G/3G phones in India and the high cost of 4G and 5G smartphones, especially for rural clients, are the main barriers to people shifting to higher network bandwidths. Vodafone Idea said that smartphone prices continue to plague low-income populations.

To provide dependable 5G connectivity, Reliance Jio said a lot of spectrum is needed. They suggested auctioning the 28GHz spectrum, 6GHz band, and C-band (on a flexible use basis) in addition to the scheduled E- and V-Band sales.

Remember that telecom service providers advocate shutting down 2G and 3G networks, not the government. If such a decision is reached, the government will likely provide people time and help to adjust.

Conclusion

Reliance Jio and Vodafone Idea want the Indian government to shut down 2G and 3G networks for current subscribers and switch to 4G and 5G networks to boost the 5G ecosystem. The notion is a response to TRAI’s consultation document on 5G ecosystem growth barriers. The widespread use of 2G and 3G phones in India and the high cost of 4G and 5G devices, especially for rural residents, are issues. Vodafone Idea and Reliance Jio recommend spectrum band auctions for 5G reliability.
