As Terminal 1 is set for completion, preparing Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA) for a major expansion. The airport’s passenger capacity will rise to nearly 100 million per year with this new terminal, anticipated soon. The three terminals handle 70 million passengers annually.
Terminal 1 gets double passenger capacity
Terminal 1, developed as part of Phase 3A of the development plan, will double airport capacity. Its yearly passenger capacity will increase from 20 million to 40 million.
Dedicated Domestic Low-Cost Carriers Facilities
Domestic low-cost carrier activities are now concentrated on Terminals 1 and 2. The new Terminal 1 should continue this LCC focus.
Advanced Facilities Improve Passenger Experience
Terminal 1 will have various modern amenities for passengers. The new terminal will use modern technologies to improve passenger experience. Baggage screening may be automated by ATRS, lowering wait times. The Individual Carrier System (ICS) will streamline airline luggage handling, potentially speeding up baggage claims. Common Use Self-Service (CUSS) kiosks will let passengers check in, print boarding passes, and modify bookings, while Self-Baggage Drop (SBD) kiosks will let them tag and drop off their checked luggage, speeding up check-in.
For efficient passenger boarding and disembarking, the new terminal will have 22 aerobridges and 13 bussing gates.
Investment and Expansion Timeline
The expansion phase contains Rs 12,000 crore in investments. This ambitious project intends to make IGIA a major aviation hub that can handle 100 million people a year, reinforcing its role as India’s gateway.
