Instagram is reportedly planning to launch a separate app for its short-form video content, Reels. If true, this move would mark Instagram’s entry into the dedicated short-video app market, a space currently dominated by TikTok.
Instagram’s Standalone Reels App in the Works
According to reports, Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri has discussed the development of a potential Reels app with company employees. The project, internally code-named “Project Ray,” is rumored to support videos up to three minutes long, in addition to standard Instagram Reels. The app is expected to offer a vertical scrolling experience similar to TikTok.
Competing with TikTok Amid Legal Challenges
TikTok, owned by ByteDance, has faced legal hurdles in the United States, including a proposed ban that was later overturned. However, the platform’s future remains uncertain, as it was recently granted a 75-day extension to continue operating in the U.S. until April 5.
Amid these challenges, Instagram appears to be positioning itself as a strong alternative. Reports suggest that TikTok’s parent company is in talks with the new Donald Trump administration to allow a U.S.-based company to acquire a significant stake, potentially securing its presence in the country.
Instagram’s Expanding App Ecosystem
If Instagram moves forward with the Reels app, it would be the company’s second new app in 2025. Last month, Instagram introduced the Edits app, a mobile video editing tool currently available on iOS. This app provides creators with enhanced editing features, including high-quality video capture, a dedicated drafts tab, and advanced camera settings for resolution, frame rate, and dynamic range.
While Instagram has not officially confirmed the launch of the Reels app, the news comes at a time when the competition in the short-video market is heating up. If released, this app could provide creators with new opportunities while strengthening Instagram’s position against TikTok.
