The Manipur administration declared on Wednesday that the state’s ban on mobile internet will remain in effect until November 13. The event happened the day after ten persons were injured in various sections of the state by gunfire.
According to a report from the Manipur Director General of Police, there was gunfire between two communities in the districts of Bishnupur, Imphal East, Imphal West, and Kangpokpi. A public protest was also held, calling for the return of two individuals who went missing and the release of four persons who were kidnapped by armed robbers.
The Manipur Home Department released a statement expressing concern that some anti-social elements may widely exploit social media to spread hate speech, photos, and videos that incite violence.
In the districts that have not been impacted by the violence, the Manipur government has set up mobile towers. The statement also stated that, if the status of law and order permits, the state administration is thinking about operationalizing a few additional mobile towers in other district offices on a trial basis.
“There is an forthcoming danger of loss of life or damage to public or private property, and widespread disturbances to public tranquilly and communal harmony, as a result of inflammatory material and false rumours, which might be circulated to the public through social media, SMS services and dongle services,” the statement continued.
The dissemination of incorrect material and misinformation via social media sites like Whatsapp, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and others is now prohibited on mobile devices. On Monday, November 13, the ban will remain in effect until 7:45 p.m.
