Ishan Kishan, the Indian wicketkeeper-batter, fresh from scoring his maiden IPL century in his debut match for Sunrisers Hyderabad, recently made a playful remark about Pakistan’s white-ball captain Mohammad Rizwan. In a social media post featuring Indian umpire Anil Chaudhary, Kishan mentioned Rizwan and humorously stated that he prefers not to behave like him on the field.
In a video shared on his Instagram account, Chaudhary asked Kishan about his improved decision-making when it comes to appealing. “You have grown up and matured, you only appeal when required now. Earlier you used to appeal for everything. How did this change?” Chaudhary inquired.
Ishan Kishan, now 26, responded by explaining how his approach has evolved over time. “I think umpires have become smart. If I appeal every single time, even decisions that are out they will give as not out. Instead, appeal once, appeal only when it’s actually out, and they will also have confidence that we are calling at the right time.”
He then lightheartedly referred to Rizwan’s style of appealing, saying, “Warna abhi (Mohammad) Rizwan type kuch karunga toh phir aap log ek bhi baar nahi denge (Otherwise if I act like Mohammad Rizwan then you will never give me a decision).”
Mohammad Rizwan, the Pakistan white-ball captain, has often faced criticism for his excessive enthusiasm behind the stumps. Though a skilled wicketkeeper, his persistent and sometimes overzealous appeals have irked both umpires and opposition batters, especially in situations where the decision is evidently not out. Kishan’s comment, while lighthearted, touched on a well-known aspect of Rizwan’s playing style.
