Javed Akhtar, the famous lyricist-writer is back in the spotlight with his new docu-series Angry Young Man. This series delves into the legendary screenwriting partnership between Javed Akhtar and Salim Khan, responsible for some of Hindi cinema’s most iconic films. Recently, Javed had a candid conversation with his daughter, filmmaker Zoya Akhtar, where they discussed art, literature and cinema. During this conversation, he highlighted how society has often underestimated the talents of actresses like Sridevi and Madhuri Dixit.

At a recent event, Javed Akhtar expressed his views on the societal perception of actresses like Sridevi and Madhuri Dixit. He noted that these actresses were not fully appreciated for their talent, attributing this to a lack of understanding and societal norms. Akhtar compared them to legendary actresses like Meena Kumari, Nargis and Waheeda Rehman, who were celebrated for their performances in films such as Sahib Biwi Aur Ghulam, Mother India, and Guide.

Javed Akhtar pointed out that Sridevi and Madhuri Dixit were just as talented as their legendary predecessors but did not receive similarly defining roles. He attributed this to the societal mindset of the time, which struggled to recognize and embrace contemporary or strong female characters. While the traditional image of the silent woman was becoming outdated, society had yet to establish a clear understanding of the modern woman in cinema. He further emphasized that society is still grappling with finding the right representation of today’s women in films.

Javed Akhtar also praised the work of his daughter, Zoya Akhtar, who has made significant efforts to bring contemporary women to the forefront in her films. He acknowledged that while progress has been made, there is still much work to be done in accurately representing modern women in cinema.

Do you agree with Javed Akhtar in regard to what he said about Sridevi and Madhuri Dixit?
