Actor-politician Jaya Bachchan made an appeal in the Rajya Sabha, urging the government to issue commemorative stamps marking the 50th anniversary of two iconic Bollywood films, Sholay and Deewaar. Both films, released in 1975, featured her husband, Amitabh Bachchan, in pivotal roles.
Previously, during a discussion on the Union Budget 2025-2026, Jaya Bachchan had addressed Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, advocating for greater financial support to the Indian film industry. Now, she has reiterated the need to preserve the country’s cinematic heritage by commemorating these legendary films through official recognition.
Highlighting the cultural significance of Sholay and Deewaar, she emphasized, “The initiative would serve as a cultural bridge between generations, highlighting the importance of preserving Indian cinematic heritage and the role of cinema in shaping our cultural identity.”
Both films played a crucial role in the evolution of Hindi cinema, leaving an indelible mark on the industry. Sholay became a benchmark for Bollywood classics, blending action, drama, and unforgettable characters. Meanwhile, Deewaar cemented Amitabh Bachchan’s status as the ‘angry young man’ of Indian cinema, defining an era and inspiring generations of actors and filmmakers.
With the golden jubilee of these cinematic milestones approaching, Jaya Bachchan’s appeal seeks to ensure their legacy remains celebrated and remembered for years to come.
