Kalki Koechlin and her musician spouse, Guy Hershberg, decided to have their daughter, Sappho, born underwater. The actor recently discussed the technique’s advantages and why it is not accepted as standard practice. According to Kalki, some people are discouraged from choosing it because they believe it to be “weird” or “cult-like” (“chudail practice”).

Waterbirth should be routine practice

In an interview with Aleena Dissects, the Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani actor stated, “I think this should be standard practice. Water birthing is much easier on the body during natural birth. There’s so much research that it’s easier for the baby when it comes out because it was in the amniotic fluid already, so it is not a big shock. For women, recovery is a smoother process. I think it should be the protocol,” she said.

“Why people don’t choose it is beyond me. I suppose the cost is higher here, which is a major factor. However, there are other locations in hospitals where people can do it. Not enough people are aware of it. They simply believe it to be a strange cult and a chudail custom,” Kalki said.

Kalki’s Water Birth Story

Sappho was born on February 7, 2020, to Kalki. In a lengthy Instagram post, the actor detailed her childbirth experience and thanked the medical staff for helping her get through a 17-hour labor.

In the post Kalki Koechlin said, “So thankful to the whole team at Tulip Women’s Care and my to doctors @docsheetalsabharwal and @drrvpunjabi who simply refused to give up on me even when after 17 hours I was so tired I begged them to take the baby out anyway they could and they said no, you’ve come this far and you’re going to have your natural waterbirth, and an hour later Sappho was born. You guys are miracle workers!
