Kangana Ranaut’s Movie Emergency Release Postponed Amid Rising Controversies

Kangana Ranaut’s directorial debut, Emergency which was slated to release on 6 September, has faced an unexpected delay, reportedly due to escalating controversies. The political drama, centered around former Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, was initially approved by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). However, the film’s release has been postponed after the CBFC revoked its certificate following multiple petitions. According to Kangana who is also Mandi Lok Sabha MP, the film’s approval was “stopped” because CBFC members received “threats.” As a result, a new release date has yet to be announced.

She said, “Meri film pe hi Emergency lag gayi hai. Bahut hi nirashajanak ye sthiti hai. Main toh khair bahut hi zyada disappointed hu apne desh se, aur jo bhi haalaat hain”. (An Emergency has been imposed on my film too. It’s a very hopeless state. I’m quite disappointed by our country and whatever the circumstances are).

In a recent appearance on a podcast, Kangana reacted to the stalling of her film, expressing her belief that she is being unfairly targeted. She pointed out that similar themes in Emergency have already been explored in films like Indu Sarkar (2017) and Sam Bahadur (last year). Despite initially receiving certification from the CBFC, Emergency was subjected to additional scrutiny, leading to its certification being revoked.

In a video posted on X, Kangana said, “There are rumours doing the rounds that our film, Emergency, has been granted Censor certificate. This is not true. In fact, our film had been cleared but certification has been stopped because many threats were coming in. Death threats. The Censor Board members are getting threats. We are under pressure not to show the assassination of Indira Gandhi, not to show Bhindranwale, not to show the Punjab riots. I don’t know what will be left to show then… This is unbelievable for me and I am very sorry for the state of things in this country.”

What do you think, till when the movie will release?
