BJP MP and actor Kangana Ranaut has strongly criticized comedian Kunal Kamra for his jokes about Shiv Sena chief Eknath Shinde, asserting that it is inappropriate to demean someone for their modest background.
Addressing the issue on Tuesday, Ranaut, who previously faced bulldozer action during Uddhav Thackeray’s tenure, described the move against her as “illegal” but stated that the action against Kamra is “legal.”
Her remarks come in the wake of the ongoing controversy surrounding the vandalism of a Mumbai studio by Shiv Sena workers in protest against Kunal Kamra’s parody of Shinde, who also serves as Maharashtra’s Deputy Chief Minister. The protest escalated further when civic authorities demolished the Khar studio, citing violations of building regulations.
Speaking to the media, Kangana Ranaut clarified that she does not wish to draw parallels between her past experiences and the current situation. “That was illegal; this is illegal. Insulting someone, especially a person who values respect and has worked hard to rise from humble beginnings, is wrong,” she stated.
Kangana Ranaut further criticized Kunal Kamra, questioning his credentials and denouncing the use of offensive language in comedy, including mockery of religious texts and jokes about family members for momentary fame. “Where is our society headed?” she asked, voicing her concerns over the changing nature of comedic expression.
