Karan Johar Nepotism

In a candid new interview, Karan Johar has opened up once again about the ever-controversial nepotism debate, addressing the waves of criticism he’s often subjected to — especially when launching star kids under his banner, Dharma Productions. Speaking with characteristic clarity, the filmmaker did not shy away from confronting the backlash he’s faced and shared his perspective on the industry’s perception of him.

Johar reflected specifically on the response to Nadaaniyan, the film that marked the acting debut of Saif Ali Khan’s son, Ibrahim Ali Khan. While he acknowledged the criticism surrounding the project, he pointed out the selective outrage directed at him. “Cinema intellectuals will gush about anybody else but if it’s Dharma Productions, they will say nothing,” he remarked, expressing frustration that his efforts to promote talent from outside the industry often go unnoticed. He highlighted his collaborations with director Neeraj Ghaywan — who comes from outside the traditional film fold — as examples, mentioning their work on Ajeeb Daastaans and the upcoming Homebound.

Addressing the disproportionate flak Nadaaniyan received, Karan Johar noted, “Hating on Nadaaniyan became fashionable. The more you hate on it, the more videos you put out, the more engagement you will get. People are loving nepo kid bashing and I am like ‘move on.’”

He further rejected the notion that Dharma exclusively supports star kids, saying, “It is not true. Come look at our roster.” Despite public perception, Johar made it clear he will continue to back talent he believes in — regardless of their background. “Am I the face of Bollywood hate and if I am then ‘thank you’ for giving me this elevation. But do I deserve it? I don’t think so.”
