Celebrating 25 years in the film industry, Kareena Kapoor has established herself as a versatile actor, seamlessly balancing stardom with powerful performances. One of her most iconic roles was in Vishal Bhardwaj’s Omkara (2006), where she portrayed Desdemona, the female lead in the Indian adaptation of Shakespeare’s Othello.
At a recent event, Kareena fondly recalled her pride in the film and how she arranged a special screening for some of Bollywood’s top directors to showcase her performance. However, much to her surprise, it was Saif Ali Khan’s portrayal of Langda Tyagi that stole the spotlight, overshadowing the praise she had anticipated for herself.
Kareena humorously shared how she invited renowned directors like Mani Ratnam to the screening, confident in her portrayal of Desdemona. “I said it’s such a good performance, I am going to call all the directors… I had this in Film City and everyone was there, including Vishal Bhardwaj, Konkana Sen Sharma, Vivek Oberoi, and Saif,” she recalled.
However, by the interval, the attention had already shifted to Saif’s riveting performance as the antagonist. Kareena explained with a laugh, “At the interval, everyone said, ‘You were great, but Saif was amazing.’ By the end of the movie, everyone was asking, ‘Where’s Saif?’ I was like, ‘What is happening? I called everybody to praise me!’”
Despite this unexpected turn, Kareena looks back on the experience with amusement, acknowledging the impact Saif had in Omkara. Interestingly, Kareena and Saif began dating a few years after the film, and the couple is now happily married with two children.
