Liking YouTube videos leads Ghaziabad woman to lose Rs 13 lakh in scam

After recent online frauds, people should be careful. Despite government and WhatsApp efforts, fraudsters still target people.

Text message scammers lured Ghaziabad resident Prachi Mathur with a seemingly easy opportunity to make extra money. Before paying her for like YouTube videos, the scammers deposited tiny amounts to create trust. Pretending higher returns is a frequent way to get victims to invest more.

Mathur liked videos and earned Rs 50 every like, feeling she had found a credible opportunity. On September 18, her trust was exploited and she was told to invest in a ‘benefit task’ to collect her profits and commission. Mathur first invested Rs 5,000, then Rs 26,800, to increase her income. The scammers received Rs 13 lakh from her.

The matter is being investigation by police. Kotwali ACP Nimish Patel said the police are working with the cyber cell to resolve the situation.

Be cautious when applying for jobs and making financial transactions online to avoid similar scams. Use LinkedIn, Naukri.com, or Indeed to find work. Alternative job sources require careful research. Request the offering party’s name and firm to verify validity. Online searches can often verify a company’s existence.

People should also only share personal information on trustworthy websites. Never transfer money to an unfamiliar bank account or share banking details, no matter the claims of high returns. The best defense against internet scams is vigilance.
