North Kashmir Operation: Security Forces Take Down Five Foreign Terrorists in Jumagand Encounter”

After security staffs conducted an anti-militancy operation in the neighborhood yesterday night, the fight started. Five foreign militants were reportedly killed in the encounter, and a search is now underway, according to ADGP Kashmir Vijay Kumar in a tweet.

The region has seen two gunfights this week, including this one.  Two militants were allegedly killed by the Army and the Police in a combined operation at Dobanar in the Machil sector close to the LoC, according to police reports from Tuesday.

Given the increased security measures for the 62-day Amarnath yatra, which will start on June 30, the killing of the militants became significant. The Centre has deployed more paramilitary personnel and other resources to ensure the safety of the yatra and the annual pilgrimage.

Following the India-Pakistan truce in 2021, infiltration in Jammu and Kashmir has reduced. The LoC is now at peace, allowing the locals to continue their daily activities like farming and cattle grazing as well as celebrate festivals like weddings without worrying about getting caught in the crossfire.

According to a recent tweet from the police, there was a gunfight between terrorists and the joint team of forces in the Jumagund area of Kupwara near the Line of Control.  The police said shootout began when a joint Army and police team initiated an anti-militancy operation in response to police-provided intelligence regarding militants attempting to breach the border.

This is the insurgents’ first significant infiltration attempt this year in the Kupwara region of the Valley. The number of terrorist infiltration attempts into the Valley has significantly dropped after India and Pakistan decided to reinstate the 2003 truce on the borders. However, there have been a number of infiltration attempts in Jammu’s Poonch and Rajouri neighborhoods, which are emerging as new battlefields for militants.
