Major update on Asia Cup’s venue: BCCI secretary issues big statement

BCCI secretary Jai Shah has given a major update regarding the venue of Asia Cup 2023. He has issued a big statement on the matter.

The Indian Premier League matches are being played right now in India. In the immediate aftermath of this, the members of Team India will board a flight to England to compete in the final of the World Test Championship. Aside from this, India will compete in the ODI World Cup as well as the Asia Cup this year.

It is currently unclear where the matches for the Asia Cup will be played due to the ongoing nature of the competition. However, BCCI Secretary Jai Shah stated on Thursday that an announcement about the location of the Asia Cup will be made immediately following the conclusion of the Indian Premier League (IPL).

On Sunday, the winner of the Indian Premier League will be determined. The Asian Cricket Council (ACC)’s most senior members will be participating in this event. During this, there will be a meeting in which a decision pertaining to the Asia Cup will be made.

BCCI secretary, Jay Shah, stated that a decision about the location of the Asia Cup has not been made yet. Up until now, he has been preoccupied with the Indian Premier League, but high-level officials from the cricket boards of Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan are coming to see the IPL final. It is going to be discussed, and at the proper moment, he will make a choice.

The Asia Cup was scheduled to take place in Pakistan this year, however the Indian national team is unable to go to Pakistan since their government has not given them permission to do so. Pakistan is a nearby country.

In addition, representatives from both nations got together to discuss this matter in a meeting. In this context, on behalf of Pakistan, President Najam Sethi had proposed a ‘hybrid model,’ so that four matches could be arranged in their nation and India’s match might be scheduled at some other site.

According to ACC sources, Sethi’s formula dictates that Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Nepal, and Afghanistan would each play four league stage matches in Pakistan. On the other hand, India will play its matches at a different location. Although the Pakistan Cricket Board would prefer for this match to take place in Dubai, it is possible for the match between India and Pakistan to be played in Sri Lanka.

According to sources within the ACC, Chief Executive Officer Jay Shah will convene a meeting of the Executive Board in order to make a definitive declaration about this matter. Even while the PCB would like to face India in Dubai, it is open to playing the match in any other location if India so requests. This year’s Asia Cup is scheduled to take place from September 1st to the 17th. Till now no team has announced its list of players for this tournament.

The tournament is essential for India’s preparations for the One-Day International World Cup, which will take place soon.
