On Friday, India’s Minister of State for Information Technology Rajeev Chandrasekhar revealed that Tata Group will manufacture Apple iPhones domestically and internationally. He congratulated the Tata team on taking over Wistron’s operations on X (formerly Twitter).

He included a statement and press release from Wistron announcing board approval for SMS InfoComm (Singapore) Pte. Ltd. and Wistron Hong Kong Limited to enter into a share purchase agreement with Tata Electronics Private Limited (TEPL) to sell their entire indirect stake in Wistron InfoComm Manufacturing (India) Private Limited.
According to the announcement, Wistron will follow the appropriate processes and regulations to complete the transaction after both parties confirm and sign the relevant agreements.
This means Tata Group will be the first Indian company to make iPhones.
Recently, the 155-year-old Tata Group, known for its salt and technological services, has been expanding into electronics production and e-commerce. Their vast Tamil Nadu plant makes iPhone chassis, the device’s metal backbone.
Chandrasekhar also praised Narendra Modi’s “visionary PLI scheme,” which has made India a trusted smartphone manufacturing and export hub.
The 2021 PLI scheme aims to increase domestic manufacturing, employment, and exports in 14 sectors, including electronics, white goods, textiles, medical devices, automobiles, specialty steel, food products, solar PV modules, advanced chemistry cell batteries, drones, and pharmaceuticals, with an allocation of ₹1.97 lakh crore.
