Malayalam actress Anjali Ameer has recently accused actor Suraj Venjaramoodu of making her feel uncomfortable during the filming of the Tamil movie Peranbu. Anjali, a transwoman who co-starred with Suraj in the 2018 film that also featured Mammootty in the lead role, opened up about the incident in an interview with a leading Malayalam newspaper.
Anjali claimed that Suraj asked her inappropriate and uncomfortable questions about ‘pleasure’ while they were shooting for the movie. She expressed her anger at the invasive nature of the questions, particularly one where Suraj inquired whether transgender individuals experience the same pleasure as cisgender women. “I had not faced any traumatic experiences until Suraj Venjaramoodu asked me if transgender people feel the same pleasure as women. I am a strong person, but this question made me angry,” she said.
Anjali further mentioned that she confronted Suraj about his behavior and reported the incident to Mammootty and the film’s director. Following this, Suraj apologized and has not repeated such behavior. “I warned him and reported it to Mammootty and the director. Venjaramoodu then apologized and has never spoken to me in that manner again, which I appreciate,” Anjali added.
Her comments come in the context of ongoing discussions about the Hema Committee report, which addresses issues of harassment in the film industry. Anjali was careful to point out that not everyone in the industry behaves disrespectfully. “Let me tell you, there are good people in the industry, but that doesn’t mean there are no such people who ask for compromises or favors. There are people like that too,” she clarified.
It was good that Anjali reacted immediately because of which Suraj had to stop and apologise otherwise he may have advanced further and things may have gone out of control. Strict punishment should be given to those who indulge in such disgusting acts, what do you say?
