Mallika Sherawat Reveals Her Mother Got Depressed After Her Birth

Mallika Sherawat, who has made her Bollywood comeback with the film Vicky Aur Vidya Ka Woh Wala Video, recently spoke about the discrimination she faced as a child. In an interview, the actor reflected on her challenging upbringing in Haryana, sharing how patriarchal norms shaped her early years. Sherawat revealed that her family, including both her parents, did not support her, and their attitudes were heavily influenced by gender biases.

Mallika Sherawat discussed how her family treated her and her brother differently, simply because of their gender. She explained that her parents viewed her as a “liability” while her brother was given more opportunities. “As a child, I didn’t understand, but now I do,” Sherawat said. She recalled how her parents prioritized her brother’s education and future, believing that the family’s wealth and property should go to the male descendants. Mallika highlighted the common societal belief: “Ladkiyon ka kya hai? They will get married, they are a liability, ek bojh hai.”

Although Mallika’s parents provided her with a good education, she emphasized that they did not foster an open mindset or offer her emotional support. She revealed that her birth was met with disappointment in her family, describing the negative reactions: “When I was born mere pariwaar mein maatam chhaa gaya tha.” She also mentioned that her mother likely fell into depression after her birth.

Mallika Sherawat, who was last seen in RK/RKay, now returns to the big screen in Vicky Aur Vidya Ka Woh Wala Video. The film, which stars Rajkummar Rao, Triptii Dimri, and Vijay Raaz alongside her, was released in theaters today, October 11.
