Mann Ki Baat: Congress leader slams PM Modi for silence on Manipur violence

Congress leader Jairam Ramesh slammed Prime Minister Narendra Modi for being silent over the Manipur violence.  Jairam Ramesh did so when he referred to the 102nd episode of the monthly radio programme which was broadcasted on June 18. He said ‘one more Mann ki Baat but Maun (silent) on Manipur’.

Jairam Ramesh took a dig at PM Modi, saying that the PM commended himself for India’disaster managements capabilities. He also called the Manipur violence a fully self-inflicted humanitarian disaster.

The ethnic violence caused over 100 deaths after breaking out a month ago between the members of the Meitei and Kuki communities.

Jairam wrote on Twitter: “So, another Mann ki Baat, but this time, Maun on Manipur. The PM congratulated himself on India’s excellent disaster management ability. What about the humanitarian catastrophe that Manipur is currently experiencing, which is totally man-made (in reality, self-inflicted). He has yet to make a peace request. The devastation caused by Cyclone Biparjoy, which made landfall on Gujarat’s coast on June 15, might be minimized by cooperation, according to PM Modi.

Conflict in Manipur

Notably, 10 opposition parties in the violently divided northeastern state of Manipur led by the Congress questioned the Prime Minister’s “silence” on the ongoing violent occurrences on Saturday. Additionally, they had requested PM Modi to meet with them and make a peace plea to the populace.

After a ‘Tribal Solidarity March’ in the hill areas to protest against the Meitei community’s desire for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status, the violence first started on May 3. Meiteis constitute nearly 53 per cent of the total population of Manipur and reside mostly in the Imphal Valley, while Tribals including Nagas and Kukis account for the remaining percentage of the population and live in the hill districts.
