According to the Central Board of Direct Taxes’ RTI reply, 11.5 crore PAN cards were deleted for not linking to Aadhar cards by the deadline. This year, PAN-Aadhar linkage expired on June 30. 57.25 percent of the 70.24 crore PAN card holders linked their cards to Aadhar. The RTI reply states that 11.5 crore PAN cards have been deactivated and over 12 crore have not been connected to Aadhar.

RTI was filed by Madhya Pradesh activist Chandra Shekhar Gaur. New applicants automatically link their Aadhar and PAN cards, but holders who got them before July 1, 2017, must.

The RTI reply stated that under sub-section (2) of Section 139AA of the Income Tax Act, PAN card holders acquired on July 1, 2017, must divulge their Aadhar number.

“Linking PAN and Aadhaar was required to be done on or before a notified date, failing which PAN becomes inoperative,” the RTI reply said.

CBDT charges Rs 1,000 to reactivate PAN cards.

Last March 30, CBDT highlighted the consequences of not linking PAN and Aadhar cards by the deadline. It also extended linking deadlines till June 2023.
