Mozilla reduces its workforce; will integrate AI into Firefox

With a goal of reducing investment in several products and concentrating on integrating reliable AI into Firefox, Mozilla is laying off 60 workers. The company will close Hubs, a 3D virtual environment, and combine jobs in support services.

According to reports, 60 team members at Mozilla, the maker of the Firefox browser, may be let go as it reduces its commitment in a number of products. In a memo, Mozilla stated that it will concentrate on integrating “trustworthy AI into Firefox” and that, in order to do this, it will collaborate with the Firefox Organization’s content-supporting AI/ML teams, Pocket, and Content.

“Given the reduction in staffing and lower headcount budget moving forward in ‘MozProd’, some roles have been consolidated in the People and other support services orgs so that we are offering the right level of support to our product portfolio,” the company wrote in the memo to the employee, according to the TechCrunch reports.

In addition, Mozilla will reduce its commitment in its mozilla.social Mastodon instance and shut down Hubs, the 3D virtual environment it introduced back in 2018.

“The steps we’re doing will implement this tactical adjustment, leveraging a significantly smaller team to engage with the Mastodon ecosystem and expeditiously delivering smaller trials to individuals who opt to reside on the mozilla.social instance,” the organization continued.

In markets where “competitors crowd and where it is challenging to deliver a differentiated offering,” the corporation is cutting down on spending.

It stated that there will be no adjustments made to marketing, strategy and operations, finance and business operations, or legal/policy.
