The much-anticipated extension of Mumbai Metro Line 3 is set to connect South Mumbai to the metro network by March, marking a major transformation in the city’s transportation system. Initially launched in October 2023, the underground metro currently operates between Aarey and Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC). Now, with its extension to Worli Naka (Acharya Atre Chowk station), commuting will become faster and more convenient for thousands of Mumbaikars.
Faster, Smoother, and Traffic-Free Travel
The Metro 3 extension will provide a much-needed air-conditioned alternative to the city’s congested roads and overcrowded local trains. With fares ranging from ₹10 to ₹60, passengers can bypass heavily crowded areas like Lady Jamshedji Road and Dr. Annie Besant Road. Key locations such as Dharavi, Dadar, Siddhivinayak, and Worli will now be connected via a 22-km underground corridor, eliminating the stress of traffic jams.
Although there are some interconnectivity challenges—for instance, the Dadar Metro station is nearly 1 km away from the Dadar railway station—the extension still offers much-improved access to major business hubs like BKC and Worli.
Current Operations and Future Growth
The first phase of Metro 3, running between Aarey and BKC, sees around 25,000 passengers daily since its launch on October 5, 2023. While this figure is lower than expected, ridership is expected to increase significantly as the metro expands towards South Mumbai, one of the city’s most densely populated areas. This extension is expected to attract more commuters, reduce road traffic, and decrease dependency on private vehicles.
An Engineering Marvel
Constructing Metro 3 has been a technological and engineering challenge, especially due to Mumbai’s dense urban landscape. One of the most difficult tasks was tunneling under the Mithi River, which required innovative techniques to handle unstable ground conditions and constant water flow. Specialized tunnel boring machines (TBMs), along with hydrophilic gaskets that expand on contact with water, were used to ensure airtight tunnels.
Another major challenge was constructing Acharya Atre Chowk station at a busy intersection. The process involved meticulous planning, traffic diversions, and safeguarding critical civic utilities to ensure smooth execution.
What This Means for Mumbai
With the Metro Line 3 extension, South Mumbai is set for a transportation revolution. This underground corridor will not only cut down travel time but also play a crucial role in reducing traffic congestion in the city. As Mumbai’s Metro network expands, residents can look forward to a faster, more sustainable, and efficient way to commute.
