Nagaland got its first medical college 60 years after the state achieved statehood.

The Nagaland Institute of Medical Sciences and Research, the state’s first medical college, was launched by Union health and family welfare minister Mansukh Mandaviya in Kohima.

In April, the National Medical Commission granted the NIMSR permission to admit 100 MBBS students for 2023-24.

The Chief Minister of Nagaland, Neiphiu Rio, laid the foundation for Nagaland Medical College in 2014.

With the institution’s foundation stone laid, our medical college ambition has come true. Rio said Nagaland residents had a long-held hope.

NIMSR accepted 85 Nagaland and six other state MBBS students this year.

NIMSR is a medical college and research institute. Nagaland’s medical college was one of 58 partially funded by the government.

Why Nagaland medical college is historic

The first medical college’s opening was a historic day for Nagaland, said CM Rio.

Nagaland CM Rio claimed more than 1,000 patients were referred to other states for cancer treatment each year due to a lack of medical facilities.

People can now get cheap health care in the state thanks to a medical college.
How the NIMSR will teach medicine

As a research institute, the NIMSR will educate doctors and address Naga health issues.

NIMSR Kohima provides holistic medical education to MBBS students, hospital-based and community-based health care to patients through various Health Care Programs, and extra and intramural research facilities.

Conclusion

NIMSR is Nagaland’s first medical college 60 years after statehood. Union health and family welfare minister Mansukh Mandaviya opened the college, which has National Medical Commission approval for 100 MBBS students in 2023-24. NIMSR Kohima offers MBBS students a holistic medical education, hospital-based and community outreach healthcare, and extra and intramural research. The inauguration is part of the government’s initiatives to promote medical education and healthcare facilities in Nagaland and the Northeast, providing affordable and accessible healthcare across India. Expanding Jan Aushadhi Kendras, which give heavily subsidized medicines, is another priority.

NIMSR Kohima’s opening is vital to the government’s attempts to strengthen medical education and healthcare in Nagaland and the Northeast.

“The aim is to ensure that each citizen of India is able to get access to affordable and accessible healthcare across the country,” he said, stressing Jan Aushadhi Kendras’ expansion of heavily subsidised pharmaceuticals.
