The wait is finally over — and the choice is a bold one. On March 2, the makers of Tumbbad 2 officially confirmed that Nawazuddin Siddiqui has joined the cast. He beat out Akshaye Khanna for the part. With production yet to begin, this casting decision is already shaping up to be the most talked-about move in Indian genre cinema this year.

Nawazuddin Siddiqui Confirmed for Tumbbad 2

Sohum Shah and Pen Studios, led by veteran producer Dr Jayantilal Gada, made the announcement on March 2. The confirmation ends weeks of speculation that followed a Hindustan Times report last month, which named both Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Akshaye Khanna as the two actors being considered.

Ultimately, it was Nawazuddin who got the part. His character details remain under wraps, however the makers confirm he will play a pivotal role central to the film’s folkloric arc.

What Nawazuddin and Sohum Said About the Casting

Nawazuddin Siddiqui said in an official statement, “Tumbbad has always been a film I admired for its originality and atmospheric storytelling. When Sohum shared the vision for the sequel, I liked the story and I joined them in their journey.”

He added that the character he will portray has many layers. Sohum Shah, meanwhile, called the casting “incredibly exciting,” stating that Nawazuddin brings “unmatched intensity and authenticity” to every role. Furthermore, Shah believes the actor will take the sequel’s narrative to “a whole new level of depth and impact.”

The Akshaye Khanna Factor — and Why This Choice Matters

The shortlist itself tells a story. Both Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Akshaye Khanna are known for intense, unconventional performances. However, they represent very different energies on screen.

Nawazuddin brings a rawer, more volatile presence — qualities that align closely with Tumbbad’s dark folklore universe. Consequently, his selection suggests the makers are doubling down on atmospheric, character-driven storytelling rather than opting for a more restrained approach.

Pen Studios and the Business Case for Tumbbad 2

Dr Jayantilal Gada of Pen Studios said the collaboration aligns with the studio’s commitment to “good content at a grander scale.” Besides that, the financial logic is hard to ignore. Tumbbad’s 2024 re-release performed strongly at the box office, proving the IP has serious audience pull even six years after its original release.

That commercial validation is precisely why Pen Studios is investing in the sequel. Therefore, this is not just a passion project — it is a calculated franchise play in a space where original Indian horror-fantasy remains extremely rare.

Tumbbad — From 2018 Cult Classic to Growing Franchise

Released in 2018, Tumbbad was directed by Rahi Anil Barve, with Anand Gandhi as creative director and Adesh Prasad as co-director. The film was written by Mitesh Shah, Prasad, Barve, and Gandhi, and produced by Sohum Shah alongside Aanand L Rai, Mukesh Shah, and Amita Shah.

Sohum Shah played Vinayak Rao, a man consumed by greed, navigating a terrifying mythological world. The film built its cult status slowly, through word of mouth and critical appreciation. As a result, its re-release in 2024 felt less like nostalgia and more like a long-overdue reckoning.

What Comes Next for Tumbbad 2

Production on Tumbbad 2 has not yet begun. No director has been officially announced for the sequel. However, with Nawazuddin Siddiqui now on board alongside Sohum Shah and the backing of Pen Studios, the project has moved from rumour to reality at speed.

The franchise now carries serious creative and commercial weight. In a Bollywood landscape hungry for original genre storytelling, Tumbbad 2 is already the most anticipated folklore film in the pipeline.
