Hansal Mehta and Rajkummar Rao have built a strong creative partnership, delivering critically acclaimed films like Shahid, CityLights, and Aligarh.
Among their collaborations, the 2017 crime drama Omerta recently resurfaced in discussions when a social media page described it as a “hidden gem” and a “career-defining” film for Rajkummar Rao. However, Hansal Mehta responded with a hint of irony, pointing out that despite the praise, Omerta struggled to find an audience upon its release. He expressed his disappointment over the film’s lack of viewership, adding that neither he nor Rajkummar had attempted a project like it since.
Reacting to a tweet, Hansal Mehta wrote, “So career defining that nobody watched the film. So career defining that neither of us have made a film like this again. Career defining indeed.”

Omerta, a biographical crime drama released in 2017, featured Rajkummar Rao in the intense role of Ahmed Omar Saeed Sheikh, a British terrorist of Pakistani descent responsible for orchestrating the 2002 murder of Wall Street Journal journalist Daniel Pearl.
In a past interview, Rajkummar described it as one of the most challenging roles of his career. While the film earned critical acclaim for its gripping narrative and powerful performances, it failed to make an impact at the box office.
