OpenAI’s Boardroom Shakeup: CEO Sam Altman fires entire board a day after he returns

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has returned to the company with a new board, including former Salesforce co-CEO Bret Taylor and former Treasury Secretary Larry Summers. The new initial board of directors could include up to nine directors, with Microsoft expected to have a seat on the board.

A day after returning as OpenAI CEO, Sam Altman replaced the board that ousted him, Quora’s Adam D’Angelo is the sole boardroom survivor. Bret Taylor, former Salesforce co-CEO, and Larry Summers, former US Treasury Secretary and Harvard University president, will join him. The new board of directors includes former Salesforce co-CEO Bret Taylor, former Treasury Secretary Larry Summers, and Quora co-founder and CEO Adam D’Angelo.

Multiple reports say there could be nine directors, with Microsoft expected to join. Altman was not named to the board, but he may join. The revisions are expected to remove Helen Toner, Tasha McCauley, and Ilya Sutskever from the board, who opposed Altman.

Sam Altman rejoins OpenAI

Yesterday, Sam Altman announced his comeback to ChatGPT with a new board and Satya Nadella’s support. Altman said on X that he likes OpenAI and that his recent actions have helped keep this team and its mission intact.

“When I decided to join Microsoft on Sunday evening, it was clear that was the best path for me and the team,” he wrote. “With the new board and Nadella’s support, I’m looking forward to returning to OpenAI and building on our strong partnership with Microsoft.

OpenAI said it has struck an agreement in principle for Altman to return as CEO with a new board of Bret Taylor (Chair), Larry Summers, and Adam D’Angelo.
