It’s a hot summer day, and you keep reaching for your water bottle again and again. After all, everyone says staying hydrated is the key to good health. But have you ever stopped to think, can you actually drink too much water?

Medical experts say that while dehydration is a common and serious issue during summer, overhydration is often overlooked. Drinking excessive amounts of water can upset the body’s electrolyte balance and lead to a condition called hyponatremia, also known as water intoxication. This happens when sodium levels in the blood get diluted, which can affect how your body functions.

When this balance is disturbed, the body’s cells may start to swell. In more serious situations, even brain cells can swell, leading to symptoms like headaches, confusion, and in extreme cases, life-threatening complications.

Experts stress that the key to staying healthy is balance. Drinking water is essential, but more is not always better. Instead of forcing yourself to drink excessive amounts, it’s important to listen to your body’s needs.

For most adults, around 2–3 litres of water per day is generally enough under normal conditions, though this can vary depending on weather, physical activity, and individual health.

In the end, good health isn’t about overdoing anything—it’s about awareness, balance, and understanding what your body truly needs.
