Pakistan Lost The CT2025 Opener To Kiwis But Babar Azam Created History

Babar Azam, one of Pakistan’s finest batters and a former captain, etched his name in the record books on February 19, 2025, by becoming only the second Pakistani player to score 100 half-centuries in international cricket. His composed 64-run knock off 90 balls in the opening match of the Champions Trophy 2025 against New Zealand at the National Stadium in Karachi was a testament to his consistency. However, despite his achievement, his innings was met with criticism due to its slow pace, which many believed contributed to Pakistan’s 60-run loss.

Since making his international debut against Zimbabwe in 2015, Babar has accumulated 29 half-centuries in 59 Tests, 35 in 127 ODIs, and 36 in 128 T20Is. The only Pakistani batter to surpass him in this feat is the legendary Inzamam-ul-Haq, who recorded 46 half-centuries in Tests and 83 in ODIs during his illustrious 16-year career.

The match itself turned out to be a forgettable one for the defending champions and tournament hosts. After opting to field first under Mohammad Rizwan’s leadership, Pakistan struggled to contain New Zealand’s batting firepower. The Kiwis, led by stunning centuries from Will Young (107) and Tom Latham (118*), posted an imposing 320/5. In response, Pakistan faltered in the chase, getting bowled out for 260 in 47.2 overs. While Babar top-scored with 64 and Khushdil Shah provided some fireworks with a 49-ball 69, the team never looked in control.

Babar’s innings, though historic, came under scrutiny for its sluggish nature. With a strike rate of 71.11, his knock included just six fours and a solitary six. Given the daunting target of 321, fans and cricket pundits questioned whether his approach was too conservative for the situation. The debate over his intent and pacing overshadowed what was otherwise a remarkable personal achievement.

While Babar’s place in Pakistan’s cricketing history is secure, the loss against New Zealand has left the team with plenty to ponder as they look to bounce back in the tournament.
