Hundreds of people at Sirhind in Fatehgarh Sahib, who were waiting for a special train that was supposed to travel from Punjab to Bihar, destroyed the railway station after it was cancelled.
The special train was to depart from Sirhind railway station and go to Katihar in Bihar, coinciding with the Chhath Puja holiday. Anger-filled passengers allegedly threw stones at Sirhind Railway Station when a special train from Punjab to Bihar’s Katihar was cancelled earlier today, according to a tweet.
There were hundreds of people gathering on the train rails and station. They gathered stones and pelted some parked passenger trains, as well as the railway police. After the special train was cancelled, the passengers became enraged and began throwing stones at other trains. They were meant to return home to celebrate Chhath Puja.
Days prior, in a stampede to board a special train headed for Bihar in Surat, Gujarat, one person had died and two had been injured. For the convenience of travelers, the railways have announced a number of special trains to handle the extra passenger flow during the Chhath Puja.
This year, Chhath Pooja will be observed from November 17–20. Numerous train stations are crowded with people returning to their hometowns in Bihar, Jharkhand, and eastern Uttar Pradesh in preparation for the Chhath Puja celebration. Now, the Indian Railways have said that they will operate 2,83 special trains across 4,480 journeys during the Chhath Puja celebration this year.
Prior to Chhath Puja, the East Central Railways had scheduled 42 trains to travel to Bihar. Railway routes such as Danapur-Saharsa, Okha-Naharlagun, Muzaffarpur-Yesvantpur, Howrah-Raxaul, Sealdah-New Jalpaiguri, Delhi-Patna, Delhi-Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra, Kochuveli-Bengaluru, Danapur-Bengaluru, Puri-Patna, Benaras-Mumbai, Ambala-Saharsa, and others were among the major destinations to be connected by these special trains, according to a statement from the ministry of railways.
