The Indian woman wrestler Vinesh Phogat was on the verge of scripting
history in the Paris Olympics 2024 by winning a gold medal in 50 kg
wrestling category but today, before the final, she was disqualified
completely from the tournament.
The unfortunate development took place because Vinesh Phogat weighed 100 gms more than the weight limit and despite the difference being very less, she has been disqualified as per the rules which means she will come empty-handed from Paris.
Usually, Vinesh takes part in the 53 kg wrestling category but for the Paris Olympics, she reduced her weight to 50 kg. An Indian coach revealed that she did everything that she could for reducing her weight, she skipped meals, did running, didn’t sleep at night but still she was not able to bring her weight within the limits.
The Indian Olympic Association has made a statement in this regard, “It is with regret that the Indian contingent shares news of the disqualification of Vinesh Phogat from the women’s Wrestling 50kg class. Despite the best efforts by the team through the night, she weighed in a few grams over 50kg this morning. No further comments will be made by the contingent at this time. The Indian team requests you to respect Vinesh’s privacy. It would like to focus on the competitions on hand.”
