PBKS Buys ‘Wrong’ Player At IPL Auction Due To Confusion In Names, Clarifies Later

The auction for the IPL 2024 took place on 19 December at Coca-Cola arena, Dubai and it was certainly a highly intense day for the franchises as they fought against each other for their favourite players, while they lost some players, each franchise managed to buy some of their favourite players.

However, there were some moments of confusion as well including the one when the Punjab Kings management made a bid for a wrong player because of the confusion in names. It was a case of mistaken identity as there were two players with the same name – Shashank Singh, while one Shashank Singh is a 19 years old cricketer who hasn’t played any first class match till now, the second one is a 32 yrs old batting all-rounder from Chattisgarh who has played for the IPL teams, Delhi Capitals, Mumbai Indians and Sunrisers Hyderabad.

After buying the 32-yr Shashank Singh for Rs 20 lakh, the PBKS management realized that they made a mistake and they tried to reverse the bid by talking to auctioneer Mallika Sagar . However, the bid wasn’t reversed as the hammer had come down, after Preity Zinta and Ness Wadia signaled to Mallika Sagar, she said, “It was a wrong name? You don’t want the player? We are talking about Shashank Singh. But the hammer has come down. Player No. 236 and 237 both went to you.”

However, later on, PBKS clarified that they didn’t make the mistake as they tweeted, “Punjab Kings would like to clarify that Shashank Singh was always on our target list. The confusion was due to 2 players of the same name being on the list. We are delighted to have him onboard and see him contribute to our success.”

PBKS also welcomed Shashank Singh onboard:

Well, just think what the 32 years old Shashank Singh must have gone through all this time!!!
