Pepperfry  Co-founder Ambareesh Murty Dies From Heart Attack

Ambareesh Murty, the co-founder of the online furniture retailer Pepperfry, passed away after a heart attack on Monday in Leh. Ashish Shah tweeted on social media, “Extremely devastated to inform that my friend, mentor, brother, and soulmate @AmbareeshMurty is no more,” according to his pal and the other Pepperfry co-founders. He passed away last night in Leh due to a heart attack. Please say a prayer for him and give his family and loved ones courage.

The home decor business was launched in Mumbai in 2012 by an IIM Calcutta graduate.

Cofounder of Cashkaro Swati Bhargava tweeted in response to the unexpected news of the entrepreneur’s passing: “So sorry & surprising to learn about @AmbareeshMurty’s abrupt mortality due to cardiac arrest. May he rest in peace, his soul. An outstanding businessman and an inspiration to many, may his legacy with @Pepperfry continue on.

Ambareesh, who was 51-year-old, worked for several major businesses after graduating from IIM Calcutta. Cadbury, the second-largest confectionery company behind Mars, hired him in 2005. Mondelez International acquired Cadbury in 2010.  

He spent more than five years working for the chocolate firm, according media sources, before switching to the finance industry. He spent over two years as the vice president of marketing and customer support at ICICI AMC.

Later, he worked for barely five months at Levi’s, an American apparel firm famous worldwide for its Levi’s brand of denim pants. Later, he launched his own firm, which is now known as Origin Resources. This company helps Indian mutual fund businesses.

Unfortunately, it had failed, and the company was forced to close in 2005. Following that, he was employed by Britannia, an Indian multinational FMCG corporation with a focus on the food sector. After a brief stint here, he joined the online marketplace eBay India. Murty managed eBay’s operations in India, Malaysia, and the Philippines.  After at least six years of employment, Murty and Shah launched their own business, Pepperfry, in 2011. The firm has funded $245.3 million (about 1,770 crores) since its beginning and supplies furniture to 500 locations.
