Predator drone deal wins Defense Ministry’s approval; PM Modi to create history in US

The Defense Ministry has approved a Predator drone deal with the US. During his visit to the US, PM Modi will create history by speaking to the Joint Meeting of the US Congress.

On Thursday, the Defense Ministry gave the go-ahead for a Predator drone deal. Under the deal, the drones will be bought from the United States. The Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) would make the final choice. The nod comes right before Narendra Modi’s trip to the United States.

Defense officials say that the deal for the Predator drones was accepted at a meeting of the Defense Acquisition Council (DAC) on Thursday. The acquisition plan will now go through a process and then need approval from the Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS).

The DAC is the highest-level group in the Defense Ministry that makes decisions about acquisitions. The CCS, on the other hand, gives the final approval for high-value purchases. The Indian Navy will get 15 drones, which they will use to keep an eye on things in their area of duty. Also, the three services plan to buy similar drones with a middle altitude and a long-range from domestic sources.

In the meantime, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be in the United States from June 21 to June 24. During his trip, US Vice President Joe Biden will have him at the White House. This is the first state visit that PM Modi has made to the US in his nine years as prime minister.

PM Modi will also make history by being the first Indian prime minister to speak to the Joint Meeting of the US Congress for a second time. Indian Americans see this invitation as a sign of the historical importance of the relationship between the US and India. It shows that both countries want world peace and wealth, especially in the Indo-Pacific area.
