Premier League: Leicester City’s tenure in top tier of English football ends  just 7 years after epic EPL title

Leicester City’s tenure in the top tier of English football came to an end with Everton’s triumph against Bournemouth. Seven years ago, they won the Premier League championship, but had difficulty reaching that level of performance again.

The final whistle on Sunday seemed like the death knell to the players for Leicester, as their tenure in the top tier of English football came to an end with Everton’s triumph against Bournemouth. Leicester’s stint in the top tier of English football came to an end as Everton defeated Bournemouth. The Toffees were able to fight another day, but the champions from the 2015-16 season did not fare as well and were unable to survive as the legendary King Power Stadium was rendered speechless. The happy ending to the fairytale had finally arrived.

Seven years ago, Leicester City broke the hearts of football fans all over the world by stealing the Premier League championship away from the Big 6 clubs: Manchester City, Liverpool, Manchester United, Arsenal, Chelsea, and Tottenham. It was a defining moment for the club, but ever since then, they have had trouble reaching that level of performance again.

However, the euphoric highs of winning the championship carried with them some challenges as well. The major clubs began to pursue Leicester’s players as aggressively as sharks, which finally resulted in the departure of important players like N’Golo Kante and Riyad Mahrez. The only player to stay with the club until the very end was the club’s talisman, Jamie Vardy, but as age caught up with him, even he was unable to save the Foxes from relegation.

Even after they had won the title, Leicester continued to cultivate and shape new talent, some of which they acquired from other leagues while others were developed in-house. The ascension of players such as Youri Tielemans, James Maddison, Wesley Fofana, Harry Maguire, and Harvey Barnes is more evidence of this.

The team would still have success in the seasons leading up to its demotion, and it would also be in position to qualify for the Europa League in both the 2020-21 and 2021-22 seasons. They would also go on to triumph in the FA Cup final in 2021, beating Chelsea by a score of 1-0 to claim the trophy. The fact that there was some success at all is one of the things that makes the downgrade so puzzling.

The transfer of Fofana to Chelsea for the price of £75 million is one of the primary factors that may have contributed to the club’s demise. It made their defense less effective, and the players who replaced him did not perform up to their potential. In addition, they purchased Patson Daka, Boubakary Soumare, and Jannik Vestergaard, but none of their new signings turned out to be successful.

As a result of this, a knee-jerk response led to the dismissal of manager Brendan Rodgers in the midst of the season, which, in retrospect, turned out to be another blow to their chances of surviving. Not to mention their strange choice to transfer the goalkeeper who led them to victory in the Premier League, Kasper Schmeichel, to Nice for only one million pounds. Danny Ward was brought in as a replacement for the previous goalkeeper, however he was a pale imitation of his predecessor.

A little over two years after the momentous capture of the trophy, both the club and the fans of the Foxes were forced to deal with the aftermath of a personal tragedy. The club’s owner, Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha, was murdered when the helicopter he was riding in crashed just outside the King Power Stadium shortly after taking off from the field. Even though his son, Aiyawatt ‘Top’ Srivaddhanaprabha, witnessed Leicester’s capture of the FA Cup, his presence has been severely missed. His son is known as “Top.”

Vardy, who is the only player left over from the team that won the title in 2015–2016, was mostly unnoticeable for the majority of the season but showed some signs of life at the conclusion of the campaign by scoring goals in games against Leeds and Everton. But the ferocious tempo that used to give Pep Guardiola nightmares was no longer present, and those goals were but a footnote at the end of a drought that lasted for six months.

Since the Foxes, Leeds United, and Southampton have all been relegated to the Championship, it is impossible to predict when another team will “do the Leicester” again. But until then, don’t bother yourself with the recollections.
