The Indian cricketer Prithvi Shaw has been left out of Mumbai’s squad for their upcoming Ranji Trophy clash with Tripura. Although no official reason was provided by the team, reports suggest that Shaw’s exclusion is linked to concerns over his fitness and discipline. The 24-year-old has been advised to improve both, with the decision serving as a warning for him to address these issues.
Prithvi Shaw’s recent domestic season has been inconsistent. After skipping Mumbai’s conditioning camp in Bengaluru in July and the Buchi Babu Trophy in Chennai, he started the season with a promising 76 in the second innings of the Irani Trophy against Rest of India. While the match ended in a draw, Mumbai secured the trophy based on their first-innings lead. However, his Ranji Trophy performances have been underwhelming, with scores of 7 and 12 in the loss to Baroda, and 1 and 39* in a nine-wicket win over Maharashtra.
According to sources, Mumbai selectors and team management have expressed concerns about Shaw’s fitness, reportedly considering him overweight. His lack of dedication during net practice sessions has also been a point of contention. Unlike his teammates—such as captain Ajinkya Rahane, Shreyas Iyer, and Shardul Thakur—who are regular and focused during practice, Shaw has been skipping sessions and not taking them seriously when he does attend. Both Rahane and head coach Omkar Salvi supported the decision to drop him.
Further reports reveal that Prithvi Shaw has been asked to follow a two-week fitness program designed by Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) trainers. His body fat is said to be at 35%, which is a significant concern for the team management.
