Ravichandran Ashwin, after an underwhelming performance in the first Test of the three-match series against New Zealand in Bengaluru, has rediscovered his form in the ongoing second Test at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium, Pune.
The 38-year-old off-spinner, introduced into the attack by captain Rohit Sharma before the 10th over of New Zealand’s innings, has now etched his name in history as the leading wicket-taker in the World Test Championship (WTC).
Ashwin achieved this milestone by dismissing Will Young during the match. Earlier, he had removed New Zealand skipper Tom Latham to equal Australia’s Nathan Lyon’s tally of 188 wickets in WTC matches. Ashwin reached this record in just 39 matches, whereas Lyon took 43 matches to claim the same number of wickets.
With 189 wickets to his name, R Ashwin now stands alone at the top of the WTC wicket-takers list, surpassing Lyon, who remains at 188 wickets. Behind them are Australia’s pacers Pat Cummins (175 wickets) and Mitchell Starc (147 wickets), occupying third and fourth spots, respectively.
Well played, R Ashwin.
