Rain and Snowfall Forecasted in Kashmir’s Higher Reaches

As December gets closer, the growing coldness in the atmosphere is revealing the type of weather to expect in the next several days. Speaking about the highest region of India, weather officials reported on Wednesday that although the lowest temperature in Kashmir has dropped several degrees, it has mostly remained above freezing as the valley’s upper reaches prepare for light to moderate snowfall.

The two resorts that had sub-zero minimum temperatures on Tuesday night are Gulmarg and Pahalgam, which are twin towns in north Kashmir. Gulmarg recorded a low of minus 1.8 degrees Celsius that night, according to reports.

A low of minus 1.5 degrees Celsius was reported at Pahalgam, in the Anantnag district of south Kashmir, which also acts as one of the base camps for the yearly Amarnath yatra, according to reports. The previous night’s low was 1.2 degrees Celsius.

There was a decrease of more than three degrees from the previous night’s 3.9 degrees Celsius to a minimum of 0.8 degrees Celsius in Srinagar, they said.

According to the officials, the mercury dropped to 0.8 degrees Celsius in Qazigund, the town that serves as the entrance to the south Kashmir valley. They further said that Kupwara town in north Kashmir recorded 1.3 degrees Celsius, while Kokernag town recorded a low of 2.6 degrees Celsius.

According to MeT authorities, a western disturbance is affecting the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir. This disturbance is expected to provide mild to moderate rain or snow in the middle and upper regions of the territory.

The majority of Jammu and Kashmir is now experiencing gloomy weather, and they predicted that this will continue into the evening with light rain or snow in several areas.

The experts stated that there is a risk of light to moderate rain or snow in a good number of locations, along with a chance of thunderstorms or lightning in a few locations on Thursday night and throughout the night. They also stated that although snowfall in the plains is improbable, if it does happen, the quantity is anticipated to be small.

The experts went on to say that by December 1st, there should be a noticeable improvement in the minimum temperature, after which it is predicted to drop by two to four degrees.
