The relationship between Raj Babbar and Smita Patil was one of deep emotion, conflict, and undeniable connection. Their story began on the sets of Bheegi Palkein, a time when Raj was still married to Nadira Babbar. It was during this phase that Raj found himself drawn to Smita Patil, enchanted by her fierce individuality and unfiltered honesty.
In an interview, Raj Babbar once addressed the complexities surrounding their bond. “My relationship with Smita was not the result of problems with Nadira — it just happened,” he said, reflecting on how emotions evolved beyond reason. Smita, known for her emotional depth on screen and off it, spoke openly about the turmoil she endured. “In the kind of situation we are involved in, both of us are going through a private hell. It’s very easy to say ‘it’s okay’. But it’s not very easy in reality,” she admitted, describing their connection as “a painful trip.”
Their shared life took a tragic turn in 1986 following the birth of their son, Prateik. Smita Patil passed away due to post-partum complications, leaving Raj Babbar shattered. In a heartfelt recollection shared with Rediff.com, Raj spoke about their final drive to the hospital. “Throughout the journey from home to hospital, she kept apologising and I told her that everything would be okay. She looked at me with tears in her eyes. Her look said it all. The doctor came out after an hour and said she had gone into a coma.”
The weight of that loss continues to linger in Raj’s words as he expressed how deeply intertwined their lives had become. “I was part of her and she was part of me. It is natural that you miss a person who was your heart and soul throughout your life, no matter how brave you may say you are. She and her memories will continue to be part of me till my last day.”
After Smita’s untimely death, Raj Babbar found his way back to Nadira Babbar, and the two remarried. Yet, the chapter he shared with Smita Patil remains etched in his heart—a testament to a love that defied norms, endured struggle, and ended in irrevocable loss.
