Raj Kapoor, often referred to as The Showman of Bollywood, left an everlasting impact on
Indian cinema. A visionary actor, director, and producer, he seamlessly combined deep
emotions, social themes, and unforgettable music in his films. Here are five iconic works that
define his extraordinary legacy:

Awaara
The 1951 masterpiece Awaara told a powerful story of love, class conflict, and redemption.
Kapoor’s portrayal of Raj, a man torn between poverty and privilege, struck a universal chord.
The iconic song “Awaara Hoon” became a global sensation, propelling the film to immense
popularity in Russia, China, and beyond. Awaara earned a groundbreaking ₹15 crore worldwide,
an unprecedented feat for its time.

Shree 420
In 1955, Shree 420 cemented Kapoor’s reputation as a socially conscious filmmaker. A sharp
critique of inequality in post-independence India, the film followed an idealistic man corrupted by
wealth and materialism. Songs like “Mera Joota Hai Japani” and “Pyar Hua Iqrar Hua” became
cultural phenomena, symbolizing hope and love. The movie collected ₹3.9 crore worldwide,
showcasing Kapoor’s ability to merge entertainment with impactful storytelling.

Bobby
With Bobby (1973), Kapoor redefined Indian cinema by introducing youthful romance. Starring
Rishi Kapoor and Dimple Kapadia, this vibrant love story captivated a generation with
chart-topping tracks like “Main Shayar To Nahin” and “Hum Tum Ek Kamre Mein Band Ho.” A
colossal box-office success, Bobby earned ₹30 crore worldwide, making it one of the
highest-grossing films of its time.

Mera Naam Joker
Kapoor’s most ambitious project, Mera Naam Joker (1970), was a poignant tale of love,
heartbreak, and sacrifice told through the life of a clown. Initially a commercial failure, the film
later gained cult status. Its iconic song “Jeena Yahan Marna Yahan” encapsulated life’s
bittersweet essence. Over time, the movie earned ₹18 crore worldwide, becoming one of
Kapoor’s most celebrated works.

Ram Teri Ganga Maili
Kapoor’s final directorial venture, Ram Teri Ganga Maili (1985), tackled societal hypocrisy
through the poignant story of Ganga, played by Mandakini. Its breathtaking visuals and soulful
tracks like “Tujhe Bulaye Yeh Meri Bahen” resonated deeply with audiences. The film became a
box-office hit, collecting ₹19 crore worldwide, marking a fitting conclusion to Kapoor’s illustrious
career.
