Rajeev Chandrasekhar Announces MeitY’s Plan to Approach GST Council After Ensuring Sustainable Framework

Rajeev Chandrasekhar, Minister of State (IT), disclosed at a gathering that the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), which is in charge of overseeing online gaming, intends to ask the GST Council to reconsider its decision to impose a 28% tax on online gambling. Before addressing revenue issues, Chandrasekhar emphasized the necessity to build a thorough regulatory framework for online gaming.

The creation of a framework for legal and sustainable internet gaming is still in its infancy. Following the creation of this framework, we will approach the GST Council and ask for their reconsideration in light of the new regulatory standards, according to Chandrasekhar.

Chandrasekhar recently highlighted the significance of defining legal online games in a tweet, acknowledging the dynamic nature of the regulatory framework for online gaming. He said that the GST Council would subsequently get notification of the framework’s finalization.

The GST Council decided to levy a 28% goods and services tax on the money made by online gambling enterprises, horse racing, and casinos from July 11.

Chandrasekhar drew attention to the difference between the GST Council and the Government of India, pointing out that the council functions as a federal organization that represents all state governments. He made it clear that the council’s decision was the culmination of three years of joint work, but the creation of the legal framework for online gaming had only started in January 2023.

Chandrasekhar called for caution in drafting laws while realizing the unhappiness that the GST Council’s decision has caused in the online gambling sector. In contrast to immediately responding to complaints from the company or industry, he emphasized the necessity of developing sustainable frameworks through rigorous analysis, which might prevent unexpected outcomes.

“We think so, and the prime minister has made it quite clear: In the digital sphere, approach everything with the viewpoint of the following ten years. Therefore, before we take individuals on board, the laws and norms go through thorough, in-depth engagement with the stakeholders. The government started with a very different set of online gambling regulations than what we came up with after 3.5 months of consultation. Thus, it is preferable to perform anything properly than quickly. Chandrasekhar tacked on.
