Rajeev Khandelwal, a familiar face across television and film, candidly discussed the arduous journey to his acting career, revealing the challenges he faced from his middle-class background.
The actor recalled his father’s initial fury at his career choice, a reaction he now understands stemmed from paternal concern for his well-being.
In an interview, Rajeev Khandelwal recounted a pivotal moment when he was asked to leave his parents’ home. “I was thrown out of my house. I come from an army background. My parents said they didn’t understand what this industry is all about. They knew that I had it in me to live my life decently but they wondered ‘acting ka bhoot kaha se aagaya’. They knew that I spoke about acting since my childhood, but they never thought that I would want to make it my career.”
Despite his parents’ insistence on a more conventional path focusing on studies and a stable career, Rajeev remained resolute in his desire to act. He detailed his father’s harsh ultimatum: “It was like either you stay here and do the conventional things which students of your age are doing, (otherwise) if you want to be a romantic hero and do acting, I don’t have the money to sponsor you.” This firm stance, as Rajeev explained, was essentially a directive to pursue his dreams outside the family home, highlighting the deep-seated resistance he faced on his journey to becoming an actor.
