Renowned filmmaker Rakesh Roshan has voiced his disapproval of the growing vanity van culture in Bollywood, calling it unnecessary when the entire crew is present on set at the same time. Expressing his views in an interview, Roshan remarked that the trend has expanded beyond actors, with choreographers, stunt directors, and even filmmakers now demanding personal vans. Despite their popularity, he revealed that he has never felt the need for one himself.
Looking back at how Bollywood has evolved over the years, Rakesh Roshan pointed out that makeup rooms in studios used to be well-equipped and adequately maintained. He explained that the shift towards vanity vans began when they were introduced for lead actors, but the trend soon spread to others involved in film production.
“Even though makeup rooms have improved over time, vanity vans have become so fashionable that they are now considered essential for everyone on set. Directors, choreographers, and stunt directors all expect to have their own space, and even those who stay on set for 24 hours require a van. I don’t understand why this has become a necessity,” he stated.
The veteran filmmaker further added that even though vanity vans existed during his filmmaking days, he never used one. Instead, he preferred using any available facility on set. “If I needed to use the washroom, I would simply go to anyone’s vanity van. But I fail to see the point of having a personal van when you are constantly on set,” he reflected.
